Coco Peat and Perlite mixed together is a popular choice of substrate for indoor growers for many reasons.
Coco peat, a.k.a. coco coir/coco pith/coco soil, is a 100% natural fibre made of coconut husks, it's a natural growing medium. Coco has excellent water retention and when fully saturated it still holds around 22% oxygen - Roots need both water and oxygen to thrive. Perlite is added to the coco to improve drainage, helping prevent overwatering and increasing the amount of oxygen available to the roots.
Coco/Perlite is often mixed into garden soil to improve aeration and drainage.
