Not only is it sterile but its aeration properties combined with its water-holding capacity makes it a very suitable medium for direct contact with the seeds. Vermiculite decomposes with time to release the plant nutrients potassium and magnesium. Vermiculite is also used in reptile incubation. It's a great incubation medium for reptile eggs and also for raising the humidity in incubators. It is advisable to wear a dust mask and goggles when working with vermiculite to avoid throat or eye irritation.
